The Jharkhand High Court has granted Tata Steel Limited a stay on tax proceedings related to a disputed GST demand of ₹493.35 crore, pausing enforcement until the next hearing scheduled for April 15, 2026. This marks a significant development in the company’s ongoing legal battle.
Tata Steel Limited, one of India’s largest steel producers, has been contesting a major GST demand raised by the Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur. The latest order provides temporary relief, ensuring no further proceedings until the matter is heard again.
Background Of The Case
The dispute stems from a show cause notice issued in June 2025, alleging wrongful input tax credit claims between FY2018-19 and FY2022-23. While Tata Steel had already paid ₹514.19 crore in GST, authorities demanded an additional ₹493.35 crore, along with penalties and interest.
Court Intervention
On March 24, 2026, the Jharkhand High Court stayed all proceedings related to the adjudication order dated December 18, 2025. The writ petition filed by Tata Steel seeks to quash the order, and the case will be heard again on April 15, 2026.
