Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Guwahati-Silchar Expressway, a landmark infrastructure project aimed at transforming connectivity in Assam and the North-East. The expressway, part of a larger package of projects worth Rs 23,550 crore, will significantly reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar, boosting trade and regional integration.
On the second day of his Assam visit, PM Modi performed the bhoomi poojan of the expressway and dedicated multiple development projects to the nation. The initiative is part of Assam Mala 3.0, a road infrastructure program that will construct over 900 km of roads across the state, enhancing inter-state connectivity and economic growth.
Expressway Significance
The Guwahati-Silchar Expressway is designed as a four-lane, access-controlled corridor. Once completed, it will cut travel time between Barak Valley and Guwahati from over eight hours to just four-and-a-half hours. This project is expected to strengthen logistics, improve passenger convenience, and attract new investments in the region.
Other Development Projects
Alongside the expressway, PM Modi unveiled projects across Kokrajhar, Guwahati, and Silchar worth more than Rs 47,600 crore. These include energy infrastructure upgrades, hydro-electric projects, and initiatives to provide land rights to tea garden workers, marking a historic milestone in social welfare.
