India has entered a new era in athletics with the launch of its maiden National Indoor Athletics Championship at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium on March 24, 2026. The event marks the country’s formal debut in indoor track and field, paving the way for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has organized the two-day championship at the state-of-the-art indoor facility in Bhubaneswar. This milestone event introduces Indian athletes to indoor formats, featuring shorter tracks, specialized sprint races, and field events adapted for indoor conditions.
Indoor Athletics Debut
The championship includes events such as the 60m sprint, 200m races, pole vault, long jump, shot put, and heptathlon. Unlike outdoor competitions, indoor athletics offers consistent conditions, narrower tracks, and unique challenges, giving athletes exposure to international standards.
Road To 2028 World Championships
Bhubaneswar has already been confirmed as the host city for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships. The current national event serves as a preparatory step, allowing athletes, organizers, and officials to adapt to the format and showcase India’s readiness for global competition.
Athlete Participation
Around 300 athletes from across the country are competing, including several national-level champions. The event is expected to inspire younger athletes and expand India’s footprint in global athletics.
