Senior Jaguar Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern is officially leaving the British luxury automaker at the end of March, capping over 22 years of shaping the visual identity of Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover. The move opens a critical chapter as JLR navigates its electric vehicle transition and a high stakes rebranding of the Jaguar marque.
McGovern’s departure, announced via an internal company memo and confirmed by Autocar and other automotive outlets, marks the formal end of a design era that defined modern Range Rover, Evoque, Defender, and Discovery styling. His exit comes amid ongoing leadership changes at JLR, with CEO PB Balaji publicly acknowledging McGovern’s “indelible stamp” on the brands while also signaling a shift toward a new creative direction.
McGovern’s Design Legacy
Over more than two decades, Gerry McGovern became synonymous with a clean, architectural design language that turned Range Rover into a standalone luxury marque and redefined compact SUVs with the Evoque. His influence stretched from the voluptuous curves of the Disco 3 to the squared off, minimalist Defender, helping Land Rover and Range Rover maintain a premium aura in fiercely competitive segments.
For Jaguar, McGovern also oversaw the marque’s controversial rebranding and the development of the Jaguar Type 00 concept, a bold all electric show car that embodies the brand’s pivot from sedans to a tech heavy, lifestyle oriented identity.
Circumstances Of The Exit
The separation was first reported in late 2025, with sources suggesting that McGovern was effectively asked to step down, even amid earlier reports he had been “escorted from the building.” JLR has consistently denied a firing, instead framing the departure as a “planned exit” as he sets up his own creative consultancy.
McGovern himself has thanked the Tata family and JLR leadership for opportunities, while remaining tight lipped about internal tensions. The optics, however, underscore the pressures of overseeing a high profile reengineering of Jaguar at a time of rapid electrification and softer global demand for luxury SUVs.
What This Means For Jaguar Land Rover
Losing its chief creative officer so deeply enmeshed in the brand language is a major test for JLR’s design continuity and brand coherence. The automaker must now ensure that the Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery visual codes remain recognisable, while also making Jaguar’s new electric first direction feel credible and desirable.
Internally, the search is now on for a successor who can balance heritage cues with the need for fresh, digital era design thinking. The transition also coincides with JLR’s broader “Reimagine” strategy, which includes electrification of the Jaguar lineup and a targeted push into premium EV and lifestyle oriented segments.
