Women Power Unleashed: India’s Workforce Gains Momentum
India has also seen the overall unemployment among women decrease dramatically, indicating improved gender inclusion and employment participation. As per the most recent Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Economic Survey 2025, the rate of female unemployment is now down to a mere 3.2%, as against 5.6% six years back, which shows a welcome improvement in women's economic participation.
- Enhanced Women Labour Force Participation: Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR) increased from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24. The increased opportunity in the formal sectors and governmental campaigns towards employing women contributed to this enhancement.
- Urban Benefits: Urban women's unemployment reduced from 8.9% to 8.2% in 2024, representing greater job availability among women in metropolitan areas.
- Transition from Informal Jobs: The proportion of rural women employed as unpaid assistants in home enterprises decreased from 19.9% to 18.1%, reflecting a transition towards more formal jobs.
- Government Policies: Schemes such as PMKVY, Rozgar Melas, and Start-Up India have been instrumental in training and placing women across industries.
This decrease in female unemployment is a proof of India's commitment towards economic empowerment and inclusivity. Nonetheless, issues such as underutilization of women with education and skill-job imbalances are also areas of concern.
