The Unsung Opener Bows Out: Priyank Panchal’s Final Innings Begins
Priyank Panchal, the talented opener from Gujarat who once stepped in for Rohit Sharma in India’s Test squad, has decided to hang up his boots at the age of 35. Known for his reliability and leadership on the field, Panchal leaves behind an impressive domestic career that spans nearly two decades.
As a right-handed opening batter, he played 127 First-Class matches, racking up 8,856 runs with an average of 45.18, which includes 29 centuries and 34 fifties. He also participated in 97 List A games, scoring 3,672 runs with 8 centuries, and in 59 T20 matches, where he made 1,522 runs and hit 9 half-centuries. Panchal truly made his mark during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, where he set a record with 1,310 runs, including a career-best 314 not out—an incredible season that helped Gujarat secure their first title.
While he never got the chance to play internationally, Panchal was a regular in the India A setup, even captaining the team and receiving two call-ups to the Test squad, including one as a replacement for Rohit Sharma during the England series in 2021. He also contributed to Gujarat’s victories in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
In his heartfelt farewell, Panchal expressed gratitude for the inspiration he drew from his late father and the steadfast support from fans that fueled his remarkable journey.
