With India experiencing a hot summer with temperatures crossing 40°C in most parts of the country, big businesses are rising to the occasion to safeguard delivery agents who endure the blistering heat every day. Industry giants such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Zomato have introduced wide-ranging initiatives to protect their delivery partners from heat-induced health hazards.

These efforts comprise setting up several rest stops with air conditioning, pure drinking water, seating, toilets, and mobile charging stations. Amazon alone intends to launch 100 "Ashray centres" to serve delivery partners across businesses, a refuge from the heat during hot times of the day. Likewise, Zomato and Blinkit have grown their "Shelters Project" with over 2,500 rest points countrywide.

Companies are also distributing lightweight uniforms, sun caps, and hydration aids such as buttermilk and electrolyte drinks to help workers stay cool and hydrated. Regular health screenings and insurance coverage for heatstroke and related illnesses are being provided, along with 24/7 emergency helplines and ambulance services in over 800 cities.

To further reduce heat exposure, some companies are adjusting delivery schedules, shortening routes, and employing rotational shifts to stay away from the hottest parts of the day. Additionally, training on heatstroke awareness and first aid is being provided to empower workers.

These pre-emptive measures follow government advisories to states and employers to shift work timings and improve worker safety during heatwaves, an increasing acknowledgment of the gig economy's pivotal position and the need for its workforce to be protected on a priority basis.
