Ladakh has launched India’s first cold desert riverbank restoration project along the Indus River, aiming to restore fragile ecosystems, expand green cover, and involve local communities in sustainable development. The initiative, called the Indus River Green Corridor Eco-Restoration Plantation, was inaugurated by Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on March 23, 2026.
The project was unveiled at Spituk Pharka in Leh on the International Day of Forests. It marks a milestone in India’s environmental conservation efforts, focusing on the unique cold desert ecosystem of Ladakh. Nearly 1,000 native saplings have already been planted along the Indus riverbank.
