8th Pay Commission May Bring 80 Percent Salary Hike For Government Employees

Introduction

The 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) has been formally constituted, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. It will review pay structures for over 50 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners, with its recommendations likely to reshape salary and pension scales across India.

Fitment Factor And Salary Calculation

The fitment factor is the key formula used to determine revised salaries. Currently, the 7th CPC uses a fitment factor of 2.57. Reports suggest the 8th CPC may raise this to 3.68 or higher, which could translate into an 80% salary hike for Level 1–3 employees. In some scenarios, hikes could even reach 157% for certain categories. 

For example:

Current minimum pay: ₹18,000 (7th CPC)

With fitment factor 3.68: ₹18,000 × 3.68 = ₹66,240

This represents an increase of nearly 80% compared to the existing structure.

Implementation Timeline

Analysts expect the 8th CPC recommendations to be implemented by late 2026 or early 2027, aligning with government fiscal planning. The hike will primarily benefit lower-grade employees, but higher-grade staff and pensioners will also see substantial increases. 

Economic Impact

Experts believe the salary revision will temporarily boost consumption and savings, positively impacting sectors such as automobiles, housing, and retail. However, it will also increase the government’s wage bill significantly, requiring careful fiscal management.
