Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka, a series of strategic deals and humanitarian initiatives have brought a new era in bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and India. Sri Lanka on Sunday released 14 Indian fishermen as a gesture of goodwill, showing the increased cooperation and goodwill that has been developed during Modi's meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The fishermen dispute, a contentious one for decades, was approached with a humanitarian outlook in talks. Modi made the point to settle issues of this kind so as to secure livelihoods on both sides of the Palk Strait. The release of the fishermen goes to underscore the will of both nations to prioritize humanitarian concerns over broader diplomatic relations. Among the major agreements signed during the visit are the historic defence cooperation agreement for mutual upgrading of defence exchanges and exercises. Modi guaranteed long-term assistance to Sri Lanka's economic revival and security in the form of debt rescheduling and reduced levels of borrowing. Joint initiatives such as the development of Trincomalee as a hub for petroleum and the modernization of rail connectivity were initiated, an indication of India's impact on Sri Lanka's infrastructure development. Modi's visit was symbolic as well because he was conferred the very honorific Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan award for his role in enhancing bilateral relations.
