In a decisive move to uphold food safety standards, Maharashtra’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister Narhari Zirwal announced the immediate suspension of two senior Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials and the closure of a factory in Nandurbar district found repeatedly guilty of oil adulteration. The action was taken during the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly in response to mounting concerns over public health risks.

Administrative Action and Accountability

The suspended officials include the Joint Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the FDA
Both were held responsible for failing to act on multiple reports of adulteration at the Akkalkuwabased factory
The factory, identified as Gopal Provision, was found to be producing substandard Mahika brand soybean oil and Kamla brand groundnut oil
Despite earlier inspections and noncompliance reports, no timely enforcement was initiated, prompting disciplinary action

Inspection Findings and Legal Proceedings

On March 10, FDA officials collected oil samples from the factory, which failed preliminary food safety tests
The samples have now been sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru for reanalysis
Out of 12 edible oil samples collected in Nandurbar during FY25, five were declared substandard
Legal proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, have been initiated in two cases, with three more pending lab confirmation

The issue was raised by Shiv Sena MLA Amshya Padvi, with supplementary questions from BJP legislator Sameer Kunawar
