Sweeping Change: Delhi Declares War on Waste with Month-Long Cleanliness Drive

In a bold move to redefine civic responsibility and urban hygiene, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a citywide campaign titled Delhi’s Freedom From Garbage – Cleanliness Drive. Timed to coincide with Independence Day celebrations, the initiative runs from August 1 to 31 and aims to transform the capital into a cleaner, greener, and garbage-free metropolis.

1. Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) are invited to upload before-and-after photos of cleaned areas on a government portal  
2. Top-performing RWAs will receive cash prizes: ₹25 lakh, ₹15 lakh, and ₹10 lakh respectively  
3. The cleanest ward will be awarded ₹50 lakh, while the cleanest Vidhan Sabha constituency will receive ₹1 crore  
4. Citizens, institutions, and youth groups are encouraged to join hands in the effort  

Targeted clean-up zones and schedule  
- Saturdays and Sundays will be dedicated to cleaning unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters  
- Special drives are scheduled at Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28  
- Ring Road clean-up operations will take place on August 29 and 31  
- Initial focus will be on clearing backlogs in schools, hospitals, and government offices

- The campaign marks a rare moment of inter-agency coordination, with MCD, PWD, Delhi Police, NDMC, and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation working in tandem
