Striking the Right Note: Ivan Mazuze’s Melodic Homecoming at Cape Town Jazz Fest
Back at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival for the first time in 13 years, Mozambican saxophonist Ivan Mazuze returns with his latest album Penuka. Scheduled on April 25–26, Mazuze's performance will be a mix of African traditional music blended with Arab and Indian elements, a representation of centuries of cross-cultural exchange.
Mazuze's compositions blend African beats with global sounds, including collaborations with artists from India, Morocco, Senegal, and Norway. His compositions celebrate diversity through creative jazz improvisation and such instruments as the sitar and talking drums. Penuka is renowned as an example of the interconnectedness of world cultures.
The 33-act festival line-up includes artists such as Black Coffee and Nubya Garcia and presents a genre-defying music experience. Mazuze's return is a celebration of his status as a cultural ambassador who links continents through music.
