Security Reimagined: Delhi Airport to Roll Out Cutting-Edge Full-Body Scanners
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will commence pilot testing of new full-body scanners from May 2025, to enhance security and facilitate faster movement of passengers. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced this today, with focus on the employment of millimeter-wave technology that ensures safety and privacy of passengers.
Four scanners are bought for the trials, two of which are at Terminal 1 (T1) and two at Terminal 3 (T3). The scanners are able to detect metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives, and are far superior to traditional metal detectors. The speed of the scans is just three seconds, with a limit of 1,200 scans per hour.
Unlike conventional X-ray scanners, the machines emit no radiation, making them safe for pregnant women and people with medical implants. The scanners create a normalized 2D image on a pre-defined human avatar to maintain passenger privacy and securely store scan data and only for authorized agencies.
The trials will be carried out in three to four months, and subsequently, a BCAS-led committee will analyze reports and prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for mass deployment. DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar emphasized that these scanners are a "game-changer" in security scanning, allowing faster checks without intrusive privacy.
