India's aspiration to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing has received a major boost, with the government stating that it received proposals worth around Rs 16,000 crore under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). The bid window opened on May 1, 2025, as part of a Rs 22,805-crore scheme to reduce import dependency, bridge the demand-supply gap, and foster indigenous production of key electronic components.

Key Highlights

Industry Giants On Board:

Tata Electronics, Dixon Technologies, Foxconn, and others have shown interest in the plan, a reflection of trust in India's electronics potential.
Local and foreign companies have submitted close to 100 proposals for manufacturing, assembly and supply-chain plants, and their approval process has already begun, with first-time project approvals expected as soon as September.

Expansion Focus:

Maximum investment is going into sub-assemblies such as camera modules, multi-layer PCBs, flexible PCBs, and passive components, and almost Rs 21,093 crore is flowing into these categories.

Job Generation & Value Addition:

The scheme is likely to create 91,600 direct jobs, earn Rs 4,56,500 crore, and add value domestically substantially, enabling Indian players to become part of international supply chains.

Differentiated Incentives:

Provides turnover-based, capex-based and hybrid incentives with strong focus on employment creation and quality issues to enable a high-value, innovation-based culture.

Category-Wise Support:

Applications for the significant categories (A, B, C) are to be submitted by July, and for supply-chain and capital equipment (D), by 2027.

Demand-Supply Deficit Challenge:

Industry projections indicate a demand-supply deficit of $248 billion by 2030 for electronic inputs, placing the importance of this initiative in perspective.

Government officials observe that such success is not just growth in volumes but a robust pipeline of "Make in India" innovation, with spillovers expected across consumer electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and others.
