India Supports Historic Global Carbon Tax on Shipping

India, along with 62 other nations, has voted in favor of the world's first-ever global carbon tax on the shipping industry. This landmark decision was finalized at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) headquarters in London after a week of intense negotiations. The tax, set to be implemented in 2028, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships and promote the adoption of cleaner technologies.

Under this new mechanism, ships will either transition to lower-emission fuels or pay a fee based on the intensity of their emissions. The tax is expected to generate up to 40 billion USD by 2030, with all revenues earmarked exclusively for decarbonizing the maritime sector. However, the agreement has faced criticism for not addressing the broader climate finance needs of developing countries. Critics also point out that the expected reduction in shipping emissions, estimated at 10 percent by 2030, falls short of the IMO's target of at least 20 percent.

The deal has been supported by countries like India, China, and Brazil, while facing opposition from oil-rich nations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Russia. The United States delegation abstained from participating in the negotiations and voting process. Despite its limitations, this agreement marks a significant step forward in global climate policy, setting a precedent for industry-wide carbon pricing.
