India Champions AI for Global South: A Vision for Shared Prosperity
In a historic revelation at the Carnegie Global Technology Summit, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan underscored India's vision to spearhead the Global South in harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for transforming society. Drawing on its strong digital public infrastructure, such as UPI and Aadhaar, India seeks to globalize AI's benefits by democratizing its access through its IndiaAI Mission, initiated in 2024.
Krishnan emphasized India's adaptive strategy towards AI regulation, with a concentration on innovation and influence over rigid regulation. He stressed the revolutionizing capability of AI in productivity enhancement, governance effectiveness, and economic development in developing countries. With projects such as embedding AI in DPIs and increasing data center capacities, India is positioning itself as an AI powerhouse in the world.
The Secretary also announced plans to organize an AI summit next year, further establishing India's position as a global leader in encouraging international cooperation. Through the exchange of scalable technologies and knowledge, India hopes to empower friendly countries and close technology gaps in the Global South.
This vision complements India's overall commitment to harnessing emerging technologies for growth that is inclusive, so the promise of AI is not confined by borders.
