House Panel Gears Up to Discuss India’s Nuclear Mission
A parliamentary consultative committee on power, led by Minister Manohar Lal, will discuss India's nuclear energy mission later this week. The agenda will include the role of nuclear power in achieving India's target of 2070 as a net-zero emissions nation and public safety issues. Members from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will be briefed on the opportunities and challenges of nuclear energy.
India's Union Budget 2025 has already planned on a wide scale to boost nuclear capacity from 8.18 GW to 100 GW by 2047, and ₹20,000 crore has been allocated for research in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Parliamentary amendments to facilitate involvement from the private sector are also in the pipeline. The controversies are designed to create popular acceptance and get the stakeholders to converge as India accelerates the transition to clean energy.
