The Gujarat government has approved the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) at GIFT City, Gandhinagar. Set up under a tripartite partnership between the State, Centre, and Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, the non-profit institute will focus on cutting-edge AI research with a budget of Rs 300 crore over five years.

In a landmark move, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has granted in-principle approval for the creation of the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) at GIFT City. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem, accelerate innovation, and position Gujarat as a hub for advanced technology research.

Key highlights from the announcement include

IAIRO will be established through a tripartite partnership involving the Gujarat government, Government of India, and Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA).
The organisation will operate as a non-profit entity under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
A budget of Rs 300 crore has been earmarked for the first five years, with equal contributions from the State, Centre, and private partners.
IPA, serving as the anchor private partner, will contribute Rs 25 crore in 2025-26.
The institute will be operational as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) from January 1, 2026.
IAIRO will focus on cutting-edge AI research, development, and applications across industries including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and technology.
The initiative makes Gujarat the first state in India to establish such an organisation under the PPP model.
The project is expected to attract global talent, foster collaborations, and strengthen India’s position in AI innovation.
Officials highlighted that the organisation will also support startups and promote AI-driven solutions for national development.
The move aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence research and deployment.
