In a bold step towards greener mobility, the Delhi government is going to introduce 250 new electric buses in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet from April 22. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Singh will flag off the new buses in an official ceremony, a major push in the city's drive to bring its public transport system into the modern age and reduce air pollution.
Key Highlights:
All 250 buses are air-conditioned, ensuring comfort and sustainability for daily commuters.
Over 150 of these are mini electric buses, each around 9 meters long, specifically designed to navigate Delhi’s congested and narrow lanes.
This rollout is part of Delhi’s broader plan to transition its entire public bus fleet to electric vehicles by 2027, positioning the capital as a leader in sustainable urban mobility.
The government plans to introduce more than 1,000 electric buses in different configurations from April, with route simplification and infrastructure development already in the pipeline to make the transition smooth for commuters.
Government's Vision and Financial Sustainability:
Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh highlighted that this is an integral part of the government's 100-day agenda for enhancing public transportation. The government also reiterated that the free ride for women programme will remain in place. Steps are being taken to make the DTC financially independent by the next financial year through new revenue-generating steps.
Background and Context
The development follows a history of operational and financial woes at DTC, as underscored in recent reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). These reports pointed to a decline in the DTC fleet and operational inefficiencies under the previous administration, with the number of buses dropping from 4,344 in 2015 to 3,937 in 2023. The current government has outlined plans for new bus shelters, modernized depots, and expanded electric bus procurement to revitalize Delhi’s public transport network.
What’s Next:
This 250 addition is only the start. The Delhi government is still on course to increase its electric vehicle fleet, enhance passenger experience, and lower the city's carbon footprint as part of its ambitious urban transport modernization program.
