Empowered Women, Insured Villages: The Rise of Bima Sakhis

The Ministry of Rural Development and LIC have joined forces to launch the Bima Sakhi Yojana, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering women and expanding insurance access in rural India. The scheme is designed to train women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) to serve as LIC agents at the Gram Panchayat level, promoting financial inclusion and social protection.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

- Women aged 18–70 with at least a Class 10 education are eligible  

- Each Bima Sakhi receives a monthly stipend: Rs 7,000 in year one, Rs 6,000 in year two, and Rs 5,000 in year three  

- Agents are expected to sell around 24 policies annually, earning an average monthly income of Rs 15,000  

- After three years, trained Bima Sakhis can transition into permanent LIC agents  

Social and Economic Impact

- Enhances women’s financial independence and workforce participation  

- Promotes insurance literacy and access to affordable products in underserved areas  

- Supports government goals under schemes like Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao and Lakhpati Didi  

- Aligns with the national vision of Insurance for All by 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat  

Implementation and Future Outlook

- The scheme was launched in Panipat, Haryana, and is expected to expand nationwide  

- LIC has invested Rs 840 crore in the first year to support training and outreach  

- Bima Sakhis will play a key role in bridging the insurance gap and strengthening rural resilience
