Former US President Donald Trump has intensified the trade standoff with China, declaring that the "ball is in China's court" to finalize a tariff agreement. In a statement dictated to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump emphasized that the US does not need to make a deal with China, but rather, China needs the American consumer and economy to thrive.

This remark follows Beijing's retaliatory move to halt deliveries of Boeing jets, responding to Trump's decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to a staggering 145%. Trump also accused China of reneging on a major Boeing deal, claiming that the country refused to take possession of fully committed aircraft.

The Trump administration has been actively negotiating with other nations to diversify trade partnerships and reduce reliance on China. Trump recently announced a temporary pause on reciprocal tariffs for countries other than China, lowering the rate to 10% for 90 days. However, he simultaneously imposed a 125% tariff hike on Chinese goods, citing China's lack of respect for global markets.

China has countered with its own 125% retaliatory tariff on US imports, further escalating tensions. Despite the trade war, Beijing reported a 5.4% economic growth in the first quarter, driven by exporters rushing to meet deadlines ahead of new US tariffs.

This ongoing battle underscores the complexities of US-China relations and the global impact of their economic policies.
