A government-funded study has revealed an alarming 80 percent decline in the population of the three-striped roofed turtle, primarily due to habitat destruction, illegal trade, and pollution. Once abundant in the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, the species now faces critical endangerment.

The study, supported by the National Mission for Clean Ganga, found low genetic diversity among rescued turtles, raising concerns about their long-term survival. Conservationists are calling for stricter enforcement against poaching and habitat restoration efforts, particularly in the National Chambal Sanctuary.
