When media tycoon Ramoji Rao conceptualized a "walk in with a script, walk out with a film" film studio, he hired acclaimed art director and architect Nitish Roy to turn the vision into reality. Roy, who has worked on Indian as well as overseas films, transformed 2,000 acres of hilly land on the outskirts of Hyderabad into Ramoji Film City—world's largest film studio complex today. Roy's master plan was harmony with nature: not a single tree was felled or mountain blown up during the construction. The payoff? A film buff's paradise with 47 soundstages, 50 studio floors, theme gardens, and sets ranging from Parisian boulevards to ancient Indian palaces. Ramoji Film City, which opened in 1996, is a one-stop shop for filmmakers and a best-liked tourist attraction, welcoming more than 1.5 million visitors each year. Roy's vision and imagination helped turn Rao's dream into reality.
