India made a groundbreaking push into the future by declaring its first national security semiconductor facility, a historic turning point in the country's technology and strategic progress. The new "Shakti" factory under the India Semiconductor Mission with American collaboration will produce next-generation chips for defence, telecommunications, and critical infrastructure sectors where security and self-dependence are top priorities.

The action comes as global supply chains come under strain and technology becomes the new front for power. India, which already imports 95% of its semiconductors, stands exposed to export controls and geopolitics. The Shakti fab will plug this gap by manufacturing chips for night vision, missile guidance, drones, and secure communications directly, sharply curtailing dependence on foreign sources and enhancing military indigenization.

Outside of defense, this approach makes India a key actor in the global chip ecosystem, drawing investments, high-value jobs, and economic growth. By nurturing local production and importing global knowledge, India is not only defending its borders but safeguarding its digital future as well. The semiconductor drive is now at the heart of India's vision of technology sovereignty and strategic autonomy.
