Mumbai, April 27, 2025 - On Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav made headlines in the world of cricket, becoming the fastest Indian player to score 4000 runs in the Indian Premier League. The vice-captain of the Mumbai Indians accomplished this feat in style against the Lucknow Super Giants during Match 45 of IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium, thrilling a Mumbai crowd with a free-flowing half-century of 54 runs off just 28 balls.
Yadav, who began his innings on 3967 IPL runs, needed extra motivation throughout the innings to get 33 runs to reach the incredible milestone, and it came when he punched a boundary off Avesh Khan to become the fastest Indian to 4000 in IPL history during the 13th over. He did this in the shortest period of 2714 balls, breaking the previous record of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and putting him as the third fastest overall after only the likes of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers. Suryakumar Yadav also crossed the 150-sixes mark in IPL during his stay at the crease, showing that he is one of T20 cricket's most destructive batters of all time.
The celebrated 34-year-old struck four boundaries and four sixes in this innings, as the Mumbai Indians posted their highest total of the season to date at 215/7 with Yadav at the helm. Additionally, with his innings, Yadav surpassed Kieron Pollard to become the second highest run-scorer for MI of all time and into an elite club of players to cross 3000 runs in T20 matches.
Suryakumar's IPL career started in 2012; however, it was a return to Mumbai in 2018 that saw him establish a premium T20 batting lineup. Now 4000 runs later, with two fortuitous centuries and 27 half-centuries, Suryakumar sits at a tremendous strike rate of anywhere in the upper 140s, and is considered one of the greatest to ever play in the IPL.
Yadav's incredible achievement further highlights a tremendous run in IPL 2025, as he also leads the race for the Orange Cap, continuing to produce runs and batter with style week in and week out. As the IPL 2025 season draws near the halfway point, Suryakumar Yadav's talent and form is just upbeat news for cricket as one of the great players from IPL history.
