Samsung India will invest ₹1,000 crore in its Sriperumbudur plant (off Chennai), adding 100 jobs to its 2,000-employee base, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa announced. The facility-which contributes 20% of Samsung's $12 billion India revenues-manufactures refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines, but has been the focus of protests regarding wages and union recognition since September 2024.
Major points:
Labour unrest: Workers held a 37-day strike in 2024 and a month-long agitation in February 2025 over suspended workers and salary revisions.
State's industrial drive: Tamil Nadu has attracted ₹10.14 lakh crore investments since 2021, offering 32 lakh jobs in sectors including semiconductors and EVs.
Global confidence: Unrest aside, Samsung's expansion reflects confidence in the Tamil Nadu workforce, with the state hosting India's highest number of factories
