Russia announced a one-sided ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8-10 to mark the 80th anniversary of Soviet victory during WWII, requesting Kyiv's reciprocation. The Kremlin warned of an "effective" response to any breach by Ukraine, whereas Kyiv referred to Russia's gesture as a "tactical PR stunt" and demanded a snap 30-day ceasefire.
The ceasefire on Russia's Victory Day holiday on May 9, a holiday of the nation. It is the wake of a disputed Easter truce, which Russia was accused of breaking over 2,900 times by Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump, just having met with Volodymyr Zelensky, insisted on a "permanent ceasefire" and called into question Putin's sincerity, stating, "He's stringing me along.".
Western leaders are still skeptical, with the foreign ministry of Ukraine emphasizing that peace must include Russia's complete pullout from occupied areas. The ceasefire follows Russia's reported deployment of additional troops along NATO's Finnish border, increasing regional tensions.
