Samsung Electronics is making a bold move to reinforce its commitment to India, announcing a fresh investment of $117 million (Rs 1,000 crore) in its Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai. This decision comes just months after the plant was rocked by labor unrest, including strikes and sit-ins over wage revisions, union recognition, and working conditions.

Key Highlights:
  • Major Investment Amid Tensions: The $117 million infusion follows two major labor disputes at the plant in the past six months, including a five-week strike last September and a sit-in protest in February over employee suspensions. Despite ongoing tensions and union allegations of union-busting, Samsung asserts full compliance with all labor laws.
  •
  • Job Creation: The expansion will generate 100 new jobs, adding to the current workforce of over 2,000 employees. Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister, T R B Rajaa, emphasized that this move “reinforces [Samsung’s] faith in the labour force of Tamil Nadu.”
  • Strategic Importance: The Sriperumbudur facility is a manufacturing hub for refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines, contributing nearly one-fifth of Samsung’s $12 billion annual sales in India.
  • Industrial Growth Context: The announcement coincides with Tamil Nadu’s strong industrial momentum, having attracted over Rs 10 lakh crore in investments and created 3.2 million jobs since 2021. The state now leads India in operational factories and manufacturing output.
  • Future Outlook: While the investment signals Samsung’s long-term commitment to India’s “Make in India” vision, the company continues to navigate complex labor relations at the plant.
This strategic expansion underscores Samsung’s confidence in India’s market and workforce, even as it works to resolve lingering labor challenges.
