On a high-stakes diplomatic day, Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated a dramatic change by offering direct bilateral peace negotiations with Ukraine for the first time since the war in 2022. At the same time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Jeddah to mark a historic visit to further boost India-Saudi Arabia relations with a host of important agreements lined up.
Important Points:
Putin's Peace Overture
Appearing on Russian state television, Putin showed willingness for face-to-face talks with Ukraine, answering growing pressure from Washington to show that he seriously wanted peace. The Kremlin explained that negotiations could involve understandings on refraining from the targeting of civilian areas, after an Easter truce collapsed almost immediately. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated Kyiv’s openness to dialogue, especially on halting attacks against civilians, and confirmed a Ukrainian delegation will meet US and Western allies in London this week to push for an unconditional ceasefire and advance peace efforts.
Modi’s Saudi Mission:
PM Modi’s two-day visit to Jeddah marks a significant step in India-Saudi relations. He will co-chair the Strategic Partnership Council with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and is likely to ink at least six significant MoUs in areas such as space, energy, health, science, culture, and cutting-edge technology. Discussions will also cover the Hajj quota for Indian pilgrims and consider deeper cooperation in defence, trade, and investment. The visit is considered to be a turning point in boosting economic and strategic relations between the two countries.
