In a historic milestone for city development, the Government of India has declared the completion of more than 8,000 multi-sectoral projects under the ambitious Smart Cities Mission. Initiated in 2015, the mission aimed to develop 100 cities by upgrading infrastructure, enhancing public services, and creating a sustainable environment.
The ventures, with an aggregated investment of around ₹1.6 lakh crore, cover a broad category of industries such as smart roadways, affordable housing, digital classrooms, e-health centers, and lively public spaces. Major achievements include the placement of more than 52 lakh solar/LED streetlights, the development of 4,700 km of smart roads, and the establishment of 7,654 smart classrooms. The mission has also registered considerable development in solid waste management, digital surveillance, and the establishment of economic corridors.
With 90% of the projects already accomplished and the rest in advanced stages, the government has pushed back the deadline of the mission to March 31, 2025, to ensure the last projects come to fruition without any extra expenditure. This achievement not only represents a leap in urban renewal but also provides a replicable model for future city planning throughout the country.
