In a historic endeavour, the Somaiya School of Civilisation Studies of Somaiya Vidyavihar University is leading a project to translate 25 literary works of international thinkers into Marathi. The mega endeavour is intended to improve international academic access and increase Marathi intellectual thought by 2027. The translations will cut across disciplines such as economics, physics, psychology, history, and philosophy, with the first volume due for release in early 2026.

Key Highlights:

Disciplinary Scope: The works would be translated across a broad spectrum of subjects, opening up foundational knowledge to Marathi readers.

Global Collaboration: The project includes scholars from several disciplines and nations, with the support of international publishers.

Future Plans: Once the Marathi versions are completed, the university will translate these works into Gujarati and Hindi.

New Academic Programs: New degree courses in Liberal Arts, with an emphasis on history and language, have also been introduced by the university.

This project is a part of larger initiatives for the promotion of Marathi language and literature after it was granted the status of a classical language. It comes in line with national initiatives towards the development of regional language teaching and research. The project emphasizes the role of translation in connecting cultural and intellectual divides, both within and outside the country.
