The Mamata Banerjee administration has elevated eight special government pleaders (SGPs) and one special public prosecutor (SPP) to strengthen its legal defense amid growing court litigation. The move comes after the chief minister lashed out against the state's "lackadaisical approach" in court cases, which she believes led to negative verdicts.

Key appointees:

SGPs: Indranil Ray, Saurav Sen, Debajyoti Datta, Sudip Deb, Partha Pratim Ray, Kaushik Dey, Aniruddha Chatterjee, Biswarup Bhattacharya.

SPP: Sabyasachi Banerjee (criminal cases).

The decision comes in the wake of the state facing mounting legal pressure for school hiring irregularities, custodial deaths, and policy-related matters. A committee will be led by Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to oversee cases.

The unprecedented legal backing aims at countering opposition attempts and streamlining reactions to sensitive cases, including the scrapped 25,753 teacher appointments before the Supreme Court.
