On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, banks in most of India are functioning normally. In Karnataka, though, all branches of public and private sector banks are shut down as part of Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. This regional holiday aligns with the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) official calendar of holidays and the Negotiable Instruments Act that acknowledges the religious and cultural value of these celebrations in the state.

Basava Jayanti celebrates the birthday of Basavanna, a much-admired 12th-century philosopher and founder of Lingayat tradition, while Akshaya Tritiya is looked upon as an auspicious occasion for new endeavors and big-ticket purchases, including gold. For this reason, physical banking facilities-including withdrawals, cheque clearance, and branch-level transactions-are not available in Karnataka on this day. State customers are requested to organize their banking work accordingly and avail digital banking options for immediate needs.

In all other states, banks are open for business as usual on April 30, 2025. Digital banking facilities, ATMs, and mobile banking are available nationally, with uninterrupted access to critical financial services.

The next important bank holiday is on May 1, 2025, for Labour Day (also Maharashtra Day in some states), when banks are closed in many major cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Key Points
  • Banks are closed in Karnataka today (April 30) due to Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya.
  • Banks are open in all other states; only Karnataka is on holiday.
  • Digital banking, ATMs, and online facilities are available everywhere.
  • Next bank holiday: May 1, 2025, for Labour/Maharashtra Day in some states.
