Mumbai’s ambitious Rs 229-crore jetty project near the iconic Gateway of India has hit turbulent waters as local residents and environmentalists unite in protest. The Maharashtra Maritime Board’s plan to build a new passenger jetty and terminal, just 500 metres from the Gateway, is being fiercely opposed by the Clean Heritage Colaba Residents Association (CHCRA), who warn of environmental hazards and threats to heritage structures.
Supported by politicians on both sides of the aisle, locals contend that the development can upset Colaba's sensitive cultural and ecological harmony, aggravate traffic jams, and compromise the area's heritage legacy. Of concern also are possible security threats and construction impact on the sensitive sea bed.
Though the government has assured that the jetty will decongest and update facilities, residents insist that the project be shifted to less sensitive locations such as Princess Dock or Ballard Estate. In the face of increasing pressure, authorities have temporarily withdrawn construction machinery, but residents promise to carry on their campaign, even resorting to legal action if their grievances are not heard.
