India, through the Indian Space Research Organisation, has taken up the lead role in the International Charter Space and Major Disasters for six months starting April 2025. This marks a significant step in India's commitment to space-based disaster management, reinforcing its position as a key player in global emergency response efforts.
The tenure began with the National Remote Sensing Centre organizing the 53rd meeting of the Charter in Hyderabad from April 14 to 17. The event saw participation from major global space agencies, with 22 foreign delegates attending in person.
India has been a signatory to the Charter since its inception and is one of its founding members. The Charter operates as a collaborative framework involving 17 member organizations that voluntarily provide Earth observation data and value-added products to manage disasters worldwide.
During its leadership period, ISRO will coordinate global disaster response efforts using space-based assets. This includes managing activation requests, ensuring rapid dissemination of disaster-related data, leading strategic planning, and facilitating training and outreach programs.
ISRO Chairman V Narayanan addressed the Charter’s board members, reaffirming India's commitment to leveraging space technology for disaster management support. The Charter, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, continues to play a crucial role in international disaster relief efforts.
