India's 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) market hit a milestone in January 2025, standing at 5.7 million subscribers. Reliance Jio has taken pole position, controlling an impressive 85% market share of this fast-growing category, as per the latest information from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Important Points:

Jio Reliance heads the 5G FWA segment with 4.8 million customers, followed by Bharti Airtel with more than 870,000 customers. Both are the sole providers of 5G FWA services in India now.

For the first time, TRAI has defined 5G FWA as a distinct wireless segment, showing the increased importance in home broadband in the country.

Most 5G FWA connections—5.5 million—are urban, with 200,000 in rural areas, showing the urban-biased uptake but also suggesting rural potential in growth.

The home broadband and FWA category is extremely profitable for operators with three times the average revenue per user (ARPU) compared to mobile services, with ARPU in the ₹600–700 bracket.

Jio's rampant growth has been able to wire up 4.5 million households to its JioAirFiber platform, and it is eying global dominance of 5G FWA only after the US-based T-Mobile.

The country's aggregate telecom subscriber count has increased by 2.1 million during the month, climbing to just below 1.2 billion, with 1.6 million new customers coming on board by Jio.
