India's steel industry is at a critical juncture, with a vision to achieve a mind-boggling 300 million tons of production capacity per year by 2030, while bearing a heavy burden of responsibility in the global decarbonisation effort. Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha underscored that decarbonisation has no "one-size-fits-all" measure, citing the complexity and heterogeneity of India's steel ecosystem.

Important Points:
  • Rapid Capacity Growth: India's steel sector is poised to exceed its 300 million ton target for 2030, courtesy of strong demand and an estimated ₹10 lakh crore investment. The sector has already seen double-digit growth, ahead of GDP and marking a turning point for domestic manufacturing.
  • Decarbonisation Roadmap: The Ministry of Steel has prepared a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap, soon to be released for public consultation. Fourteen task forces have contributed to this blueprint, focusing on green hydrogen, carbon capture, recycling, and increased use of renewable energy.
  • Green Steel Mission: India has become the first nation to define "green steel," with the initiation of a taxonomy to classify steel products based on carbon intensity. The National Green Steel Mission features incentives for cleaner production, government mandates for green steel procurement, and convergence with green hydrogen programs.
  • Investment & Innovation: Attaining these twin objectives needs huge investment, technology upgradation, and policy support. Pilot projects for hydrogen in steel production, adoption of solar power, and recycling of scrap are being supported by the government to reduce emissions.
  • Tailored Approach: India's special challenges—infrastructure deficiencies and diversity of energy mix—officials emphasize that decarbonisation plans need to be tailored to local conditions, not copied lock, stock, and barrel from elsewhere.
India's steel narrative is going to determine both its economic destiny and its climate pledges, reconciling growth with green technology.
