India is taking a bold step toward strengthening its domestic space industry by inviting private companies to design and develop satellite-bus platforms. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has launched the Satellite Bus as a Service (SBaaS) initiative, aimed at reducing import dependence and fostering innovation in satellite technology.
The program will unfold in two phases. In the first phase, up to four Indian non-governmental entities will be shortlisted based on their technical capabilities to develop modular, multi-mission satellite-bus systems. The second phase will see IN-SPACe supporting up to two hosted payload missions to demonstrate the utility of these platforms.
Pawan Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe, emphasized that this initiative is a pivotal step in democratizing access to India’s space sector. By enabling private players to develop standardized satellite-bus platforms, the country aims to become a global service provider for small satellite-bus and hosted payload services.
Rajeev Jyoti, director of the technical directorate at IN-SPACe, highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between payload developers and satellite platforms. He noted that SBaaS will provide a cost-effective solution for in-orbit validation of diverse payloads, accelerating the development cycle for emerging technologies.
IN-SPACe was established in 2020 to facilitate private sector participation in space activities, including satellite and launch vehicle development. The latest initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of expanding its space capabilities and positioning itself as a leader in satellite technology.
