Updated: April 20, 2025 08:55

Singapore's Indian community has seen dramatic improvement, national data revealing enhanced education standards and increasing incomes. Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam pointed out the improvement, using Singapore's population census as testament to the community's rise.

Key Highlights:

✅ Education Boom: 41% of Indians aged 25 and older had degrees in 2020, a dramatic increase from 16.5% in 2000.
✅ Reduced Dropout Rates: The proportion of Indians without secondary education fell from 38% in 2000 to 18% in 2020.
✅ Income Increase: The median monthly household income of Indians increased by 40% from 2010 to 2020, from SGD 6,000 to SGD 8,500.
✅ Support from the community: The Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) supported 31,500 people in 2024, with the support of 578 corporate sponsors and 400 volunteers.
✅ Immigration's Contribution: Though some of the growth can be credited to immigration, a good part is due to improvements at the community level.

Minister Shanmugam pointed out that though the progress is there, further action is required to decrease dropout rates and improve education opportunities further.
