The Indian community in Singapore has made remarkable progress over the past two decades, with significant strides in education and income levels. According to Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam, the percentage of Indians aged 25 and above holding degrees has more than doubled, rising from 16.5 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2020. This achievement reflects the community’s commitment to education and the impact of immigration and development efforts.

The dropout rate among Indian students has also seen a substantial decline, with only 18 percent leaving school without a secondary education in 2020, compared to 38 percent in 2000. While this is a notable improvement, efforts are ongoing to further reduce dropout rates and enhance educational outcomes.

In addition to educational advancements, Indian families in Singapore have experienced a 40 percent increase in median monthly income over the past decade. The median income rose from SGD 6,000 in 2010 to SGD 8,500 in 2020, highlighting the community’s economic growth and upward mobility.

Organisations like the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) have played a pivotal role in supporting this progress. SINDA’s initiatives, including educational outreach and community programs, have benefited over 31,500 individuals in 2024 alone. The organisation’s efforts are backed by 578 partners and over 400 volunteers, with SGD 1.7 million in donations received last year.

The Indian community, which constitutes 7.6 percent of Singapore’s citizen population, continues to grow, driven by professional immigrants who contribute to the city-state’s development. With ongoing efforts to improve education and economic opportunities, the community is poised for further achievements in the years to come.
