India’s Mines Minister has reiterated that coal will remain a central pillar of the country’s energy security strategy, despite ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy sources. The statement comes as the government continues to push for increased domestic coal production while reducing reliance on imports.
The Ministry of Coal has introduced a series of policy measures aimed at modernizing the sector and promoting underground mining, which is considered more environmentally sustainable than traditional opencast operations. These reforms include financial incentives to encourage private sector participation and the adoption of advanced technologies such as AI-based safety mechanisms and remote sensing tools.
India’s coal production has reached record levels, surpassing one billion tonnes in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The government has also reduced coal imports, saving billions in foreign exchange. Coal-fired power plants continue to supply the majority of India’s electricity, reinforcing the sector’s importance in meeting growing energy demands.
Officials have emphasized that while India is committed to expanding its renewable energy capacity, coal will remain a critical component of the country’s energy mix for the foreseeable future. The government aims to balance sustainability with economic growth by implementing cleaner coal extraction practices and improving efficiency in the sector.
