India is set to experience above-normal rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This forecast brings optimism for the agricultural sector, which relies heavily on monsoon rains for the cultivation of Kharif crops such as rice, pulses, and oilseeds.

The IMD predicts that the country will receive 105% of the long-period average (LPA) rainfall, translating to over 91 cm of precipitation during the June-to-September period. Favorable conditions, including neutral El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), are expected to support this robust monsoon.

While most regions are likely to benefit from above-normal rainfall, some areas, including northeast India and parts of Tamil Nadu and Bihar, may experience below-normal precipitation. The timely arrival and distribution of monsoon rains are crucial for ensuring optimal sowing and growth of crops, as well as for hydropower generation and reservoir replenishment.

This forecast is a positive signal for the rural economy, which depends on agriculture and allied activities. It is also expected to temper food inflation and boost demand for consumer goods, contributing to overall economic growth.
