A path-breaking faith-based Civil Society Organisation, the Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), has called on State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and airlines to embark on a mass enlightenment programme for Nigerian pilgrims ahead of the 2025 Hajj. This is to enlighten intending pilgrims on the acceptance and use of the US dollar and the Saudi Riyal foreign currencies, given the recent Central Bank of Nigeria approval for payment of Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) in US dollars.

IHR National Coordinator Ibrahim Muhammad emphasized that this program is crucial, as most Nigerian pilgrims are not used to foreign currencies and most likely will be shortchanged when they make transactions in Saudi Arabia. "Most Nigerian pilgrims are not used to foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar and Saudi Riyal. Without information, they are most likely to be shortchanged in transactions," Muhammad said.

The CSO requested State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and the involved agencies to add practical demonstrations on Saudi currency denominations to orientation programs. The group also requested airlines to integrate short education modules on currency use in in-flight entertainment as a corporate social responsibility.

The most widely exchanged currencies during Hajj, according to the Saudi Central Bank, are US dollar, Euro, Singapore dollar, Indian rupee, Indonesian rupiah, Emirati dirham, and Malaysian ringgit. The IHR mentioned that currency denominations must be understood in order to enable pilgrims to understand the actual value of their travel allowance and not be cheated.
