The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has registered a historic performance in the financial year 2024-25, reinforcing its position as a leading hub for premium Assam teas. The auction centre recorded the sale of 169.13 million kilograms of tea at an average price of Rs 227.70 per kilogram, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s 166.34 million kilograms sold at Rs 183.20 per kilogram.
The total sales turnover for the fiscal year is estimated to be around Rs 3,851 crore, reflecting strong demand and competitive pricing. This season also witnessed record-breaking prices, with a line of Hookmool teas fetching an all-time high of Rs 751 per kilogram. Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs) also enjoyed strong pricing, with Bejopathar teas selling at Rs 471 per kilogram. Dhemaji district’s BLF teas commanded the highest price among all districts in Assam.
GTAC has been actively promoting single-origin Assam teas through its in-house tea lounge, located within the auction centre building. This initiative allows tea producers to directly sell their teas to consumers at their own pricing, enhancing brand visibility and profitability. The tea lounge recorded a turnover of over Rs 1 crore from its tea promotion and retail activities in FY25.
Renowned globally for its richly coloured and aromatic tea, Assam’s tea industry provides livelihoods to millions, with many others directly or indirectly dependent on the plantations. The state produces nearly 700 million kilograms of tea annually, accounting for around half of India’s overall tea production. GTAC continues to stand out for its cost-effective operations, making it a preferred platform for seller members.
