Two days of unrelenting heat finally came to an end for Delhiites on Friday evening when heavy rain and thunderstorms rolled across the city. The shower, coupled with wind and lightning, not only cooled temperatures from a scorching 41°C but also raised the morale of citizens, who celebrated the much-needed respite on social media. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavier rain and windy conditions over the weekend, with the promise of relief from the suffocating heat continuing.

Weather Turnaround: From Heatwave to Rain
  • Maximum temperatures in Delhi touched 41°C on Friday, roughly four degrees above the average for the season, with a low of 25.6°C.
  • By nightfall, a new cloud cluster caused light to moderate rain over many areas of the city, from central, south, and west Delhi.
  • Showers were accompanied by thunderstorms, heavy lightning, and strong winds—gusting at up to 60 kmph—just as forecast by the IMD.
Immediate Impact and Public Reaction
  • Rain fell with a sensational drop in temperature at certain meteorological stations like Pitampura, Pusa, and Mayur Vihar, where levels dropped by 10°C between 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm—from 37°C to 27°C.
  • Local residents posted photos and videos online, with posts like #DelhiRains and #RainRelief top trending as rainfall videos went viral.
  • The showers also slightly eased air quality, though the Air Quality Index (AQI) was still at the 'poor' level at 219 as of Friday afternoon.
A forecast and outlook
  • The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Saturday, cautioning against likely thunderstorms, lightning, and very light rain, besides strong surface winds up to 60 kmph.
  • Maximum temperatures during the weekend are likely to range about 38°C, with lows at about 26°C, both a little higher than normal.
  • Neither heatwave nor "warm night" conditions are likely in Delhi at least until April 24, with clear skies predominant for the next week.
Safety and Advisory
  • Warning of caution on roads due to low visibility and slippery roads has been sounded by the authorities.
  •
  • Even with the rain, air quality continues to be an issue, particularly for vulnerable groups, because of continued pollution levels.
