Thousands of Catholic faithful have begun visiting the tomb of Pope Francis at St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome, marking a solemn yet deeply personal farewell to the beloved pontiff. The tomb was opened to the public on Sunday, a day after world leaders and mourners gathered for his funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica.

A single white rose was placed on the simple white tomb, inscribed with the Latin name Franciscus. Visitors, many crossing themselves in prayer, paused to reflect on the legacy of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88. His burial site, chosen near an icon of the Madonna that he revered, reflects his lifelong commitment to humility and simplicity.

The opening of the tomb comes amid nine days of official mourning, after which a conclave will be held to elect the next pope. Cardinals who traveled to Rome for the funeral will be meeting throughout the week to discuss the future direction of the Catholic Church.

For many, Pope Francis was more than a religious leader—he was a symbol of compassion and reform. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize the Church, advocate for the marginalized, and promote interfaith dialogue. His passing has left a profound impact on millions worldwide, with mourners expressing gratitude for his leadership and spiritual guidance.
