Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday urged an immediate de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan after recent cross-border fire in the disputed Kashmir region. Addressing reporters after a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, Erdoğan stated, "We wish for tensions between India and Pakistan to be de-escalated at once, before it becomes a more serious matter."

His remarks come after last week's attacks on tourists in Kashmir that resulted in small arms fire between the two nuclear-armed countries. Erdoğan emphasized that Türkiye always advocates for peace and stability in its region and throughout the world, and cautioned that more fighting could escalate to a broader crisis.

Turkish president also mourned the losses occasioned by violence and asked that both parties utilize dialogue as against confrontation. Remarks by Erdoğan dovetail calls for restraint by other international actors like the United States and China that have similarly advocated for an amicable ending to the strife.
