The much-awaited 'Missing Link' project of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has hit a high point, with 95% of the construction work now finished. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made the announcement after a high-level review meeting of the project, highlighting that the final stage-construction of the tallest bridge in the project-is ongoing.
Key Highlights:
-
Final Phase Progress: The final stretch is constructing the highest bridge on the expressway, a complicated engineering task where there needs to be regular testing for safety, particularly wind pressure and structural stability. Shinde has instructed engineers to provide the best standards and not to cut corners on safety or quality at any point.
-
Project Scope: The 13.3-kilometre 'Missing Link' is split into two packages and features Asia's widest tunnels (up to 23.75 meters) and two large cable-stayed bridges. The new alignment will bypass the accident-happy Khandala Ghat section, which is infamous for steep gradients and monsoon-caused traffic jams.
-
Impact on Commuters: The Missing Link, once opened, will reduce the journey by 5.7 km and should cut travel time between Pune and Mumbai by 20 to 30 minutes. Cars will have the capability of traveling at 120 km/h, and the corridor should emerge as a "zero-fatality" zone with enhanced safety and reliability.
-
Expected Completion: The project, which was initially targeted to be completed by early 2024, is now anticipated to open to the public in September 2025, with a series of delays brought about by difficult terrain and construction intricacies.
-
Wider Infrastructure Drive: The review meeting also covered related infrastructure initiatives, such as alternative routes to facilitate free flow of traffic during the last phase of construction.
Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link will revolutionize intercity transportation, relieving congestion and improving safety on one of Maharashtra's most congested highways.
