Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car manufacturer, has announced its grand plan to manufacture 70,000 units of its first electric vehicle, the e Vitara, in financial year 2026. The announcement is a big milestone in the company's path towards electrification and sustainability.
The e Vitara, a small electric SUV, was launched at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. The car incorporates state-of-the-art technology, where it has two battery options of 49 kWh and 61 kWh, providing a range of more than 500 kilometers. The car boasts advanced features like a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, Level 2 ADAS, and seven airbags to provide comfort and safety. With a price tag of ₹17-25 lakh, the e Vitara will go up against other electric SUVs such as the Tata Curvv EV and MG ZS EV.
Maruti Suzuki intends to start domestic sales of the e Vitara by September 2025, with a major chunk of the production slated for exports to international markets. The firm is also making investments in local battery manufacturing and building a strong EV ecosystem, such as home charging solutions and fast chargers at dealerships, to make adoption easier.
This move is part of Maruti Suzuki's plan to regain a 50 percent market share in passenger vehicles by combining EVs with hybrids and alternative fuels. The company seeks to make sustainable mobility affordable to Indian consumers while tapping its global network for exports.
